Dr. Seamus McCracken, accomplished professor of archaeology at the University of Maine, has proven time and again that the human spirit knows little bounds. His lifelong ambition is to find proof that this notion includes passage into an afterlife. Based on his intensive studies of the subject matter, Dr. McCracken is convinced that an old Norse myth, the Asgard gate to heaven, could still await the truly virtuous at the site of the final battle between good and evil, Ragnarok. With the help of his two graduating sons, Jared and Jack, their two friends Erin and Ben, and a couple of Seamus' colleagues, he sets out to find it at the furthest ends reached by Viking voyagers, the Land Beyond the Sun, in a place nobody thought such a relic could exist: Dome of the Rock, a state park in his own backyard.
