More than a hundred years have passed since the first woman doctor qualified, but, as Lucy found, it takes the male sex longer than that to get used to a new idea. A woman doctor, Lucy found, is still suspect to her male colleagues. Such a waste, they argued, on hearing of her ambition to specialise. "You'll get married, and then what becomes of all your work?" In vain Lucy explained that she had finished with love and marriage since Johnny Eglington had let her down so badly, and now she could come back without fear of any complications, to the district where Johnny and his wife still lived. She explained this to Johnny himself, to her old friend, Michael Dare, and to her new chief at the Melfield Hospital, that clever surgeon, Paul Brandon. Extraordinary that none of them seemed to be quite convinced!
