Due to the crippling debt incurred by her profligate father, Lady Anne Pettigrew is forced to become a music instructor. To her good fortune, however, she is rescued from her debased station by her godmother, Lady Sarah, Duchess of Merion.

But from the beginning that good fortune turns sour.
