Joan Elgin was happy at the prospect of one day marrying James Plant. Then, without even consulting her, James announced that he was leaving Holbrook to work overseas. Joan was not consoled by the protestations of her friends that she was well rid of James; nor was the hurt to her pride completely assuaged by the attentions of Doctor Luke Melton and Bill Hemmingway. Then James returned unexpectedly, and Joan had to decide whether or not to start the game of hearts all over again.
