A Matter of Identity.
Anne Ricco, the receptionist from optometry across the way, burst in. "I've been trying to get over here for ten minutes... how did you make out with your patient?"
Joan smiled ruefully. "Very well, but I forgot to get his name... he's new. Do you happen to know him?"
"Know him! Of course I do!" She stared at Joan in disbelief. "Don't tell me you didn't recognize him?"
"Should I have?"
Anne laughed delightedly, "That was Mark Semmons."
Joan was shocked. "Mark Semmons!"
Anne nodded, still laughing. "His father owns this store."
New Nurse in Town
Nurse Joan Fraser wasn't completely frank with the medical superintendent at Bishopbury Hospital when she explained why she wanted to emigrate to America. She did want to see more of the world, yes, but it wasn't quite true that she had no personal ties in England. There was one, Dr. Gladwyn James, whose wife kept promising to divorce him and who -- Joan was now convinced -- never would. The best thing she could do was put the Atlantic between them. Settled in New York, Joan was offered what she considered a “dream job” -- nurse on call at Semmons, an exclusive Fifth Avenue department store. It turned out to be even more exciting than she'd ever expected -- both romantically and professionaly -- when she started dating the “heir” to the establishment, and then agreed to act as a decoy to help the head of a gang of organized shoplifters…
