Micah Dunn, New Orleans private eye, investigates a 40-year-old mystery when a one-legged skeleton with a bullet hole in the forehead is unearthed on an archaeological dig in Mississippi. Its identification leads Micah to determine the circumstances in the death of long-missing political activist and reformer, Max Chantry. The twisted trail of old clues leads him back to Chantry's protective secretary, his high-society wife and her powerful family, as well as a knowledgeable retired police chief. Someone wants Dunn off the case, and makes him next on the list of victims that already includes a young call girl and an elderly recluse.
