Who is the man ex-schoolmaster Holder finds dead on his doorstep on a November morning? This is the first problem Dl Mallin and DS Lee have to solve. Lee's search for the answer takes him into the dubious affairs of a university professor, whilst overall looms the enigmatic figure of Louis Pelling, suspected by the police as the mastermind behind the crime wave which has troubled them sorely.
