Although her Aunt Ketty's prevarication about giving permission for her to wed Adam Digby caused Judith some disquiet, she enjoyed her life in the Norfolk Fens- the grumblings gaining ground against King Charles I made little headway in their backwater.

Of far greater moment was the discovery that yet another plan was under way to drain the Fens- bringing in a Dutchman was serious business. But the Dutchman himself didn't seem to have a serious bone in his body, and Maarten van de Scheldt was quite blatant about how attracted he was to Judith!
