Darcy Drummond looked at his cousin. A tight grin spread over his face. "Reckon we'd have to kill the nigger," he said. "Wouldn't exactly shoot him down like a dog. Least not till we got done with him."
Libby prayed that Darcy would not see the trembling that stirred her fragile young body. She knew that her love for Hannibal Duquesne could be his death sentence. He might be the master of a great plantation, but he was still a "nigger" to ever white man in the South. And ever slave on his plantation had seen them together. How long before their secret would be discovered?
Even as Libby fought to block out the horror of that vision she could not stem the yearning. She turned toward the field where Hannibal would be waiting. Hannibal, master of Duquesne. Hannibal, master of Libby Drummond.
