It had made Rachel Linwood, rising young star of show business, very happy when she met her long-lost grandfather Henry Maybury and he invited her to stay at his house. But it meant that she also met the old gentleman's adopted grandson, John Carwood -- and John was a very different kettle of fish indeed. To begin with, he was a very influential man in the theatre, and Rachel found it very hard to persuade him that she had not wangled the whole thing to her own advantage. Then he decided that she had a great future as an actress, and took it upon himself to bully her almost out of existence. How could she convince him that she was not really interested in furthering her career at all ? And, since he only seemed to see her as a piece of budding talent, how could she possibly tell him what it was that she really did want ?
