Jack Thibodeaux, the novel's handsome "knight in shining armor," is Sandra's anchor. This former FBI agent, now rising attorney, shares a smoldering history with Sandra. In addition, his armor, although shiny, has several nicks and dents. Despite being Robert's best friend, he was the catalyst behind the Petain's marital woes. With the death of Robert, Jack marks his time. Prudently deciding to give Sandra time to grieve, he becomes genuinely close to her children and a fixture in their lives. Just when he feels that the time is right to rekindle their romance, enters Lee Chienier.
Lee, ever the "man about town," is New Orleans' haut monde artist in residence. This Tulane University professor's highly creative works of art are very popular with the town's upper crust. He has made every party "A-List" with casual ease, as well as quite a few bedrooms. This dread-locked free spirit views life as a carefree fling, and urges Sandra to do the same. With Lee, she can drop her worries and forget- at least temporarily, past hurts and disappointments.
Will Sandra face her past and surrender to Jack? Or will she take flight and give in to the charismatic charm of Lee Chienier?
