Narrator Victoria "Tor" Cross, who works for an investigative agency in London, agrees to recover a valuable metalwork vase stolen years ago from a female nightclub owner by a gay employee. The client harbors a more devious purpose, though, one that gets her murdered. As Tor continues her investigation, she uncovers ties to gangsters, family secrets, and illegal gambling activities, all of which portend ill for her burgeoning relationship with lover April.
