Madelaine Somers lives in the peaceful little village of Dryslip. She works for her father in his estate agency business and is happy in her anticipation of her ultimate marriage to Keith Mortimer, a young architect. But that is until Morty applies for a job with an American company owned by a very successful man named Lucas Colby. Madelaine accompanies Morty to his appointment, secretly convinced he will need cheering up when he fails to get the job. She is horrifi ed when Lucas Colby hires Morty with the provision that he lives in America. When seeing the excited young architect out of his offi ce, Lucas Colby's eye is caught in the horrifi ed gaze of an attractive young woman seated in the waiting room. The venomous look she sends his way, before jumping to her feet and running off, chilled him for some time afterwards. It took a long time for Maddy to forget her lost hopes of Morty, but not her hatred of the man who had taken him away from her. But she could never have imagined she would meet him again in a collision on the railway station at Dryslip.
