Portland P.I. Jane Lanier is smart, sassy and tough enough to handle a case with possible mob ties -- even when she finds a local bad guy's corpse slumped at her desk. Federico DeOrca had called her for a late-night meeting at her office. Sure, a suspected mobster, drug dealer and tax cheat was not the ideal client, but he was a paying client and scruples don't pay the rent.

After a car bomb nearly ends her career and her life, Jane looks into her dead client's past, and links DeOrca to a murder trial. A chat with DeOrca's rich widow leads to a mysterious shadow corporation, laundered money, stolen millions, a young arsonist, casino bosses and more dead bodies -- all of which make Jane wonder if trading her career as a journalist for P.I. work wasn't the deadliest mistake of her life.
