The glamourous Justine Holmes becomes Shanna Nu. A moppy-headed plain-Jane searching for work in San Francisco. She lands a job at La Tige Detective Agency and uses the resources available to her to seek her enemies but instead finds the key to her heart.

La Tige is a hard-edged detective. He's sloppy, crude and lacks in social graces but has a heart of gold. A familial bond forms between them as he shows her the affection and love she's so desperately sought. He also provides clues to the mystery surrounding her birth and biological family.
