Cavalier continues where RUPERT THE DEVIL left off with the adventures of Venetia Denby, mistress of King Charles I nephew and army general, Rupert of the Rhine. Venetia grows closer to Rupert in adversity and stands by him when, humiliated and disillusioned, he is tempted to grasp the crown, betraying his uncle's trust. After Rupert's first massive defeat Venetia becomes separated from him in the confusion and is imprisoned by the Roundheads, but she is blind to everything save her determination to find her beloved prince.
