Eliza Lytton is a bit of a bluestocking -- and she much prefers poring over dusty books on ancient Egypt to husband hunting. However, her beloved father's last will and testament stipulates that she must wed before she comes into her inheritance. Eliza is grateful that her dear Papa did not specify exactly whom she must marry, though he did seem to favor the very dull Mr. Melvin Homer. Unfortunately for Eliza, Mr. Homer is also very determined. But she has made plans to disappear upon a secret journey to the north of England -- and she has arranged for a most unusual chaperone: the dashing Captain Hawkins.

Captain Hawkins is well aware that guarding a modest young lady might prove more difficult than it seems. Miss Eliza Lytton is far too pretty for his peace of mind -- and undeniably charming.
