In the wake of the disastrous potato famine of 1845, Bridgette McKenna was forced to leave her home in county Donegal,Ireland, at the tender age of fourteen, and go to work on a Virginia plantation as a scullery maid.

Now four years older, Bridgette has a dream. The tiny, fiery-haired spitfire dreams of one day being reunited with her beloved father and six brothers and sisters-but this time on American soil.
