Ivor did not want a wife. But he loved Charing, the old house that had belonged to Benedicts through the ages, and could become the owner if he agreed to a marriage of convenience. Jennet was young and willing to please, and had her own reasons for wishing to marry him. But Ivor soon found that Charing did not compensate for a loveless marriage - and Jennet was in danger of losing her heart to another man.
