Police lieutenant Rafael De Anza's wife has been charged with murdering a lady poet. Both women belonged to the same poetry group and had been seen fighting in a restaurant-a fight that ended with Laura De Anza threatening to kill Geraldine Hare. But Laura claims she was caught in the rain at the time of the crime, waiting in a doorway twenty blocks away.

Disgusted that his own police force believes his wife is the killer, De Anza has hired Carver Bascombe to find someone who saw Laura, for a foolproof alibi that would force the police to track the real killer. And no sooner does Bascombe take the case than another poet in the group is murdered.

So who is the real murderer? Tracking the members of the poetry group places Bascombe on the trail of double lives, double crosses, and multiple surprises. But he's got to work fast...before the killer gets the last word.
