The story unfolds in Berlin, as Karl Hecker discovers his wife's grandmother was Jewish. In the last year of the war, he had nowhere to turn and watched her climb into the back of a truck on the way to a death camp. From that moment forward, his life was filled with revenge and hatred of the Nazis.
As his trip to Bern is full of danger, which he overcomes, he experiences a satisfying outcome at each turn as he defies the Nazis. Of course, the sorrow of his wife's death is always present, driving our hero to become a spy. As a courier from the foreign office in Berlin to the OSS in Bern, he carries secret papers, where discovery would mean certain death.
