Katherine Cornwall came three thousand miles to answer a call for help from the husband of an old friend. It had been years since she had seen Janet Saxon, but she was as beautiful as Katherine remembered, and still as talented. The old house seemed built on a foundation of talent that was appropriate for its location on the cliffs of Big Sur country, California. Alex Saxon, Janet's husband, was an internationally-famed conductor, and the house at times seemed filled with his proteges. There was also Zoltan, a man of ready wit and ready pessimism, who admitted to being a parasite living on Alex's good will. And there was another guest...the manifestation of madness. For Alex was afraid that his wife was losing her mind, and in his desperation, he could turn only to Katherine -- not realizing that he was inviting her to share quarters with the last and most fearful guest of all -- Death!
