Word of the arrival of wealthy William Hasbrouck, and his niece Susan, and her friend Ann Murray, was all over town in a matter of hours. Gray-eyed Susan and dimpled Ann were two of the prettiest summer residents Salmon Falls had seen in years. Certainly its two most attractive bachelors, Dr. Henry "Hank" Lacrosse and attorney Freddy Fulsom, didn't lose any time getting acquainted. But were the girls as sweet as they seemed? Freddy caught Ann lying and Hank noticed that Susan was always steering the conversation around to the subject of poison! When neighbors overheard the girls discussing how to cut up a human body, they began to wonder if the town hadn't taken a couple of Lizzie Borden's to its bosom! Then a bottle of rare poison disappeared from Hank's office and William Hasbrouch took sick, and everybody -- neighbors and lovers -- leaped to the same circumstantial conclusion....
