The 2004 movie 'Open Range' starring Kevin Costner and Robert Duvall was based on a Lauran Paine novel. The band of outlaws struck Jubal Pierce's ranch while his two daughters were there alone. They mauled and killed both girls. When Jubal, his sons Jeff and young Bob, returned from hunting lost cattle, they picked up their brother-in-law and son-in-law, Frank Hudson, and took the avenger's trail. They caught one of the band at Libertad, New Mexico, and shot him to death. After that, they grimly persevered, cornering first one outlaw then another until they reached Daggett, New Mexico, where they stealthily caught up with the last three men. In the furious battle by moonlight which ensued, they killed the last of their bitterest enemies, avenging the girls' murder and ending a long, bleak trail of hate and death.
