Published in 1917, this was the first volume in Richardson's trilogy, The Fortunes of Richard Mahony.  Dr. Richard Townshend-Mahony -- a character based on Richardson's father -- has come to Australia in search of gold, but finds instead love, marriage, and disillusionment.
