When sixteen-year old Rivera Garrison boarded the steamboat Grand Lady, she fell in love with three things -- the aristocratic grandson of the ship's owner, the ship itself, and the river.
These loves stayed with her always, and shaped her life. Then the lush green Mississippi summer came to a terrible end in Vicksburg, one of the bloodiest battles of the War Between the States. Caught in the cruel music of that six week siege, young Rivera saw the hard side of life and was hardened. Her life would never be the same, but still there was love and, still, life went on.
