The body of Ray Woods, local historian, is found in the ruins of his burned-out house in the small Adelaide Hills township of Mylor, and young detective Peter Strauss is at the head of the investigation.
Peter is keen to resolve the crime and to prove his mettle as a detective, but as the case unfolds no clear suspect emerges. The state's Major Crime Team takes over and Peter becomes a small cog in the investigative machine. The Majors sift the evidence, interview the people, follow the leads, and suddenly find the murderer is still killing.
Peter is thrust from the sidelines of the investigation into the cutting edge of it, and as he struggles to understand what is happening, the killer strikes yet again.
Peter's persistence uncovers evidence that enables him to construct a coherent narrative of what's been happening and why. Now he has to convince his superiors and gather the proof necessary to confront the killer and stop the killing.
