Rural life in the Texas Panhandle during the 40's and 50's, especially after the Great Depression, was much simpler than today, but hard. The Kimballs had seen some of the hard times, as well as many good times, over their long marriage life. At the age of 75, they were at peace with the world and, especially, with each other. However, that peace was about to drastically change. While celebrating their mutual 75th birthdays, their peaceful lives were turned upside down when two hardened, convicts, on their way toward the New Mexico border, after escaping from prison in North Texas, happened to come across the Kimball's isolated farm house just North of Amarillo, Texas. Everyone who had unfortunately encountered the convicts on their cross-state journey had been slain. The old couple's lives were placed in peril by the killers now occupying their home. It would take all the ingenuity and skill learned over many years to save them from their imminent fate. But, as is often the case, all is not what it seems to be; as the ending of the story indicates. Some old couples are best left alone.
