Orphaned Alice Turner didn't want to go and live with her uncle, New York music critic, Phillip any more than he wanted her to come and live with him. But he was her guardian now that her mother was dead and after all, it would only be for a short time…until Alice came of age, it was awkward , not only because Phillip was a bachelor and set in his ways, because he had always wanted to be a concert pianist. He didn't have the talent, but Alice did.

To her delight and Phillip's amazement, she was accepted as a student at one of the world's best conservatories. This helped make up for Uncle Phillip's uneasiness and her loneliness in her life. So did the sympathy of Timothy Carleton, the young lawyer handling her affairs. But was it only sympathy Timothy had for her? Was it only gratitude felt toward him? And if she had to make the choice between a concert career or love, what would it be…?
