In Volume I of this series, the reader was introduced to the inhabitants of Pratt, Wisconsin, a small lumber town in the north along the Chicago, Minneapolis, St. Paul & Omaha Railroad line. Among the residents were the Walden family and the Johnson family, whose stories continue in this tome. As Volume II takes up the tale, it is 1918 and Pratt is nearing the end of the timber harvest in the area; no longer the stately white pine falling to the axe or the profane oaths and clamor of the lumberjacks at arduous labor. The Great War with Germany has taken a grim harvest as well, in the lives of those who heeded their country's call, and in their families and friends. The world is growing smaller and the face and character of Pratt is changing. And as Pratt continues on into this uncertain future, fraught with adventure, humor and misery, so goes the tale.
