Sherry Walker was desperate to escape from New York City and memories of Greg Atwood and their broken romance, and she was eager to pursue a career in journalism. Attorney Melvin Blake, who had handled financial affairs for Sherry since the recent deaths of her parents in an avalanche in Switzerland, offered the perfect solution. And old friend of his, Cliff Hawkins, was owner and editor of a small-town newspaper in New England, and he liked Sherry's credentials well enough to hire her as a reporter.

From the moment she arrived in Colesville, things started looking up for Sherry. Even getting her car stuck in the snow proved fortuitous when good-looking, brown-mustached Claude Randall came to her aid. A history instructor at Colesville State College, Claude was Cliff Hawkins's nephew and the older man's choice as his successor. And when, her first morning on the job, Sherry overheard two men discussing building a road through the Bell property, she knew she had a scoop. The Bell homestead had been a meeting place of patriots during the American Revolution and was cherished as a landmark by many Colesville citizens, including Claude.

Sherry's journalistic crusade sparked a volatile political conflict in Colesville, and incurred the enmity of man of the town's influential citizens. When Claude's devotion to the cause began to dim, Sherry wondered uneasily if his new reluctance had anything to do with exotically beautiful Beth Prentice, daughter of the bank president. Snared by the tangle of romance and career, Sherry had to face the painful possibility that coming to Colesville had only served to replace one set of problems with another.
