Georgina Marksley is in town for her first season. Lady Marksley has brought her to find a suitable match, but Georgina intends to enjoy the season without a care. After all, she may well decide to marry her fun-loving cousin Edmund. That is, assuming he asks. On a morning gallop with Edmund down Rotten Row, Georgina nearly bowls over the serious Lord Greystone. Georgina is surprised by his cold reception of Edmund and shocked at his complete snub of herself. Greystone does not even wait to be introduced, before turning his horse and cantering away. Georgina hopes she never encounters the man again. As much as Georgina would like to avoid the gloomy Lord Greystone, they are thrown together when fever threatens the city. She begins to warm to him, until she discovers that Greystone has been the catalyst of a scandal involving Edmund. Secrets are revealed and Georgina begins to suspect that neither man is exactly who she thought he was. Then, the mysterious summons to Greystone Hall from the Dowager Countess of Knightsbridge begins arriving on the doorsteps of eligible girls. The summons begins, “My son is in want of a wife” and word around town is that Greystone will propose to one of the guests during the ball on the final evening. Georgina travels to the great estate unsure of her feelings for Greystone, or his for her, and unaware of a scheme afoot that could ruin her.
