Christmas got up from the bunk she'd been assigned in the middle of the room holding twenty beds, with worn wooden nightstands next to each headboard. Surprisingly, only six beds were occupied. But by evening the place would fill up. She could have had a bunk by the window but she didn't need it, not planning on staying very long. Only long enough to fill the drab room suffocated in hopelessness and depression with a little Christmas cheer, her specialty. That done she turned to face the room and smiled.

Waking slowly, he rose from bed, walking barefoot across the smooth wooden floor to the window he looked up at the sky through the hard clear pane. The farmer in him could see the sun and figured it to be about half past the nine o'clock hour.
