The Combined Force under the command of General Marcus McGruder was lured into a nuclear ambush in the desert of southern Saudi Arabia and nearly decimated. Marcus and the survivors were rescued and put on board a waiting LPD in the Red Sea and later transferred to a hospital ship. Marcus and a number of men died on the hospital ship, which infuriated not only President Hugh Connors; but a long time friend of General McGruder, General Jack Layton, Commander Marine Amphibious Forces of the Atlantic Fleet. General Layton and his 'Mad Hatters' Marine Amphibious Force were fighting mad and didn't know who to pounce on. They had to evacuate their base in Qatar after a third nuclear weapon detonated north of them near a US air base. President Connors and his Cabinet used all of their resources to find out who did it, since the weapons were stolen from an Israeli air base. The UN Security Council was under extreme pressure from the White House, as well as the CIA, to find the answers for the President.
