When Verity Bowman's uncle dies, she discovers that she's inherited his fortune - as well as his attorney, Charles Congreve. But there's a catch. Concerned that Verity would be tempted to give herself completely to frivolity, her uncle has stipulated that she must first prove to have spent six months 'in a wholly rational manner'. As Charles oversees the conditions of the will, he realises he's falling in love with Verity - but his social position precludes marriage to a wealthy heiress.
