When a beautiful girl is rescued from a watery grave on a remote Scottish island, she can only remember her name, and the elderly crofter who nurses her back to health assumes Emma is the victim of a shipwreck. Eventually the horrendous storms subside and Duncan takes her to the mainland where a group of friends, researching life before the Industrial Revolution, offer to help. Jeff, a teacher, is attracted to the girl while Kate, a doctor who has loved Jeff for years, feels the presence of the green-eyed monster. Their journey south is plagued by a 'wild bunch' of bikers, led by an ageing Hells Angel with a twisted attraction to Emma. But, as her memory returns, the nightmare begins: Emma tells Jeff that she boarded the Icefiord in 1823.
