And standing alone on the auction block, Peri shivered at the words.
For only she knew she was not a slave but a Frenchwoman, noble born, whom the hand of fate had dealt a cruel blow.
Slowly she turned to face the English aristocrat who had bought her. It was said that such men bought slave girls for one of two reasons -- as either workers...or mistresses.
