Maggie Mars is a struggling screenwriter whose big break is now. Her latest script is being filmed, and she's on the set. This should be a dream come true, but it's turning out to be more like Nightmare on Malibu Beach. Maggie has major creative differences with Allegra Cort, the actress playing Maggie's main character--playing her all wrong, according to Maggie. So when Cort is found dead, her head bashed in by her own Oscar, Maggie is viewed as a major "person of interest" by the cops.

Love and handcuffs can be fun ...except when the cop who is playing with them is a rival for your man.

Maggie tries to keep a low profile and cooperate with the police. Complicating things, however, is the fact that Rosie Perez, one of the deputies on the case, is a former lover of Joe Camanetti, the sometime/longtime love of Maggie's life. Perez seems determined not to look for any other likely suspects, and Maggie wonders if she is looking to wrap up a case . . . or win back an old love. As Maggie bobs and weaves to stay one step ahead of the cops and find out who really killed one of LA's least liked megastars, she realizes that it isn't just the cops who want to finger her as the killer.
