Kate Sullivan grew up the moment her brother came to tell her she'd been jilted. Living in rural Somerset just after the Great War, she would have become an object of pity and the focus of gossip, so she took the bridal money, used the hotel reservation, and went on her honeymoon alone. Posing as the tragic, mysterious "Mrs. Radcliffe," Kate attracts the attention of other vacationers, especially the dashing Luke Halliday. Luke offers unquestioning friendship, and a job as a photographer's model if Kate wants it. To escape her well-meaning family, Kate joins Luke in London. Luke finds her a room in a respectable boarding house, and begins to discover the depths of his love for her. For her part, Kate worries that he won't love her once her secrets are exposed.
