After the death of her husband, Dakota Peterson decides to open an exclusive quilt shop in Camden Bay, a small coastal town in Northern California. It's a good place to raise her young son, business is good, and so is her steady, reliable relationship with her friend Paul.

But when architect Mitch Sinclair comes to town, Dakota's safe, predictable life turns upside-down. She's drawn to Mitch, but when she discovers that he's bought the old building she leases and plans to tear it down to build and upscale mall, she is forced to become his adversary. Although Mitch will profit, she'll be out of business -- she won't be able to pay the outrageously high rents at the new mall.

Dakota files a petition with the Town Council, hoping to get the building designated an historical landmark to protect it from the wrecking ball. When Mitch doesn't show up at the public hearing to defend his project, Dakota figures she's won. But just before the Council makes their decision, Mitch arrives with an announcement that will change their lives forever.
