Hunt travels to Washington to meet with Bekins regarding an idea to trap the James Younger gang. Hunt meets with General Ulysses S. Grant, and General Grant offers Hunt a job in Washington. Hunt's job as U.S. Marshal takes an odd turn when he travels back to Missouri when he hears that the James and Younger gang are looking for him for killing Joe Younger. Hunt receives devastating news from Washington and begins to worry about his friend, Bekins. The next class of students has one recruit that had Hunt concerned. He is from the Arkansas region that had been a hotbed of activity for civil war rogue bands of fugitives.
