Rumours abound that the famous artist Patrick Trafford has taken Parkstone Manor, the run-down estate bordering the Duke of Winchester's country seat. When Lord Vincent Sheridan, the duke's brother, discovers the speculations to be true, his interest is piqued by Niamh Trafford, Patrick's granddaughter. But Nia, apparently impervious to his charms, is determined not to marry, fully committed to her responsibilities of running the household and protecting her beloved grandfather's reputation by keeping his diminished mental capacities secret.
