Life in quincy, Illinois, suits Rachel just fine but her father Nate envisions a better furture for their family in Oregon City. All too soon the Butlers have joined a wagon train and are traveling the legendary Oregon Trail.

Their journey becomes a trail of hardships and tears as cholera, and weather extremes, and the depletion of food and nourishment wreak havoc with the pioneers.
