Verena Fayre, Probationer — Valerie K. Nelson

At the age of 20, Verena Fairclough discovers that she is in fact not her parents' child, not even legally adopted, but a foundling imposed upon her elderly and hostile father by her deceased mother. Disowned in her father's will, penniless, abandoned by her fiance, she begins training as a nurse while fate draws together the very few who know her origin. A plot rather reminiscent of Wilkie Collins, competently written and most enjoyable.
