After solving the murders of her twin and brother in law, Janet Westmore retreats to her Mammoth Lakes home high in the Eastern Sierra mountains. Before she can slip back into a routine, a young homeless mother with twin babies arrives on her doorstep late one night in a blinding snowstorm - sent, of course, by Mary, her twin.
