Blind Eye — Stuart MacBride

In Aberdeen, Scotland, Det. Sgt. Logan "Laz" McRae is investigating a series of attacks on Polish immigrants. The attacker gouges out their eyes, burns their sockets to cauterize the wound and leaves them in their injured state. There was a note that said that the Poles have taken "...our jobs, our women and our God." The attacker was given the nickname Oedipus.

A new victim is found and this time the person is one of the underworld leaders of Aberdeen. Then, when police locate a large quantity of weapons and ammunition, they worry that a gang war may be beginning. Someone wants to take over the mobsters operation.

Logan is under the strict didsiplinarian, DCI Finnie who never seems satisfied with Logan's work. Logan also works with Det. Inspector Steel, a fiesty lesbian officer who has to use a curse box to put money into to cut down on her cursing. She's currently under stress because she and her partner, Susan, want children and things aren't going well. She's asked Logan, to his horror, that if adoption plans don't work out, maybe he could donate the sperm for insemination.

This is a madcap police procedural. Police officers are hit with beer bottles, kneed in the groin and shot at without being able to return fire, since police in Scotland don't normally carry guns. McRae is an excellent protagonist with a strong sense of right and wrong. He's moral, determined and as relentless as a hungry pit-bull.
