Diana Field was thrilled when she was appointed house surgeon at a big hospital. More than anything in the world, she wanted to become a successful surgeon -- and in particular she wanted to work with Mark Royston, from whom she was sure she could learn much. Learn she did -- and, with their common love of surgery, and thrown together as they were, it was inevitable that she and Mark should fall in love. But Mark didn't want to marry her.
