Emma Jane Dance is fifteen-year-oid a bullied schoolgirl, who is just beginning to develop feelings for a boy, who lives in a poverty-stricken town in North Wales, but who is an excellent swimmer. She doesn't think there is anything special about her, especially as she is unable to hold her parents' marriage together and she is just easing her way through life.
