Mary and Rodney are middleaged best friends and soul mates. While it's obvious to everyone else that they're the "perfect couple," they both fear destroying their friendship by revealing their love to one another. Rodney overzealously uses his musical expertise and fondness for jokes and puns to create a special surprise for Mary, whose unexpected reaction threatens both their friendship and their hopedfor romance.
