Description
Father Dowling is called to investigate when an old man is kidnapped from the church's social center. It turns out that the victim is an ex-con who was imprisoned for embezzling from the bank where he worked as an accountant, and that his kidnappers--who may be his own sons--think he still has the loot. Then his body, riddled with seven bullets, turns up, and Father Dowling goes hunting for his killers.
THE FEROCIOUS FATHER
Mr. O'Halloran had lots of fund-raising ideas for St. Hilary's--plus an unidentified corpse in his car trunk. Was this just a bizarre publicity tactic--or had the Mob followed Mr. O'Halloran to town?
HEART OF GOLD
Branded a thief and perhaps wrongly imprisoned, old Ray Phillips has paid his debt to society. But when he is abducted off the steps of St. Hilary's, Father Dowling must prove that crime is all in the family.
THE DEAD WEIGHT LIFTER
A body is deposited at St. Hilary's school and Father Dowling must find out who the man is and why he died. The victim turns out to be one of Chicago's richest men--and his death was quite intentional.
THE DUTIFUL SON
Father Dowling agrees to help a man fulfill his mother's last wish by exhuming and reburying the body of an infant who died fifty years ago. But the body in question proves to be something quite different.
